Ziya Sadr, Prominent Persian Bitcoiner And Privacy Advocate, Is Arrested Amid Nation-wide Freedom Protests In Iran
Following the death of a 22-year-old Persian woman, Mahsa Amini, on Sep 16 by the so called “Morality Police”, massive protests have broken out all over Iran. The public anger quickly grew into a nationwide attempt at restoring freedom in the country. Protests have broken in more than 150 cities across the country. Furthermore, Iranians in more than 200 cities outside of Iran have also come out and protested in solidarity. Protesters face the most brutal crackdowns with hundreds of people shot dead by the riot police and thousands arrested already. Yet, protests have entered their fourth weeks. For more details on these events follow the coverage by a variety of the sources that opined on the issue (e.g., Fox (1), Fox (2), CNN, NBC, Reuters, Donald Trump, Joe Biden, Amnesty International).
Among the arrested is Ziya Sadr a pillar of the Iranian Bitcoin community. He is one of the most influential Bitcoin, security, and privacy educators in Iran who has orange pilled many. There is probably no serious Bitcoiner in Iran who does not know and respect Ziya. He has a podcast, a youtube channel, a telegram channel, and an Instagram page devoted to educating the masses about Bitcoin education in Persian. His other work includes significant contributions to the open source bitcoind.me project, which is a library of Bitcoin content in Persian, including translations of the major bitcoin books and articles. He held weekly live bitcoin Q&A sessions where he patiently answered all kinds of security and privacy questions from noob to advanced.
Soon after the protests began, he disappeared from all social media and his twitter account got deactivated. Today we learned that he is in police custody as we had feared all along. It has now been 21 days that he is arrested.
Bitcoin is all about freedom and breaking the grip of the state over money and society. We Bitcoiners have cheered for various freedom movements around the world, including recently for the Canadian truckers. Well today the brightest fight for freedom is happening in Iran where brave young people are standing up to power, guns and bullets with empty hands. What can you do to help Ziya? Be his voice. Spread the word about the movement and about Ziya to raise the costs of his arrest. This is a humanitarian crisis that needs immediate global attention.
